I am having a great time in the grade 5/6 area so far this year. I am enjoying all of my subjects and have learnt many new things in each area. I am very privileged to be the School Captain and have taken part in many different leadership roles which is giving me more confidence.
Maths this semester has been both interesting and challenging. We have been doing a lot of problem solving which required me to use my brain a lot. I’m sure there are many answers that I got wrong, but I think I was pretty persistent and tried really hard to solve the problems. We have also done a lot of work with fractions and I am now able to multiply them and I feel much more confident with fractions than I did before.
In reading we have worked in literacy circles completing lots of activities about our book that we are reading in our groups. My favourite book so far has been Rowan of Rin. I enjoyed the ‘connector’ activity were we had to relate a scene to real life. It was tricky to relate this story as it was a fantasy type book but I thought that the character Rowan was brave and a leader and so was able to relate him to real life. I found reading out loud challenging because I am used to reading in my head. So I will continue to read to my family at home for practice.
In writing, we have written several summaries about the different topics we have been looking at including war stories, Gaffney 4 and Parliament. We also have been researching on cyber bullying. I really enjoyed all the topics. I find it easier to write a summary if I have taken down some notes while we are listening. I’m not always quick at getting things down so I need to try and just pick the main point.
In integrated studies we have been rotating between different groups. We have been doing things for science, ICT and SEEL. We made our own aircraft in science using only three straws, six pieces of tape and a sheet of paper. My aircraft did not fly too well because I didn’t make it into a gliding shape, but it was fun to see the different designs that did and didn’t work well.
The excursion to Parliament was excellent and it was really fun to hear how the politicians behave with all their cheering and shouting. The building was interesting and there was so much gold everywhere inside the houses. Christine Campbell showed us around and explained how parliament works. Lunch in the park and the games were fun too.
I think it has been a great first semester and I’m proud of my efforts and I think I’ve worked well to achieve my goals. I am looking forward to learn more things next semester and prepare for high school.
