The Missing Mace

Why was the Mace stolen?

A robber might want to steal the Mace because the Mace is made out of gold. From 1891 to 1901 there wasn’t a lot of money.

What happened to it?

The Mace got stolen. He went on a tram to get away.

Why was it never found?

The robber who stole it would have hid it really well.

Who stole it?

A robber stole it because they are probably poor and need some money.

Would it be stolen today?

It would be harder because there is more security and more people are watching you.

The harm of smoking

Smoking is so bad for you. It is full of nasty chemicals that can kill you. By smoking you are taking the chance of developing one or several nasty diseases such as lung cancer, teeth decay, high blood pressure, stroke, many other types of cancers and much more.

A cigarette has nicotine. Nicotine is a addictive drug. so when you smoke your first puff, you may become addicted. It also contains things like tar, which is used to make roads, carbon monoxide, which is a poisonous gas, dangerous metals like lead and arsenic and even radioactive materials which can cause cancer.

Why do people start smoking? Do they get it from their family or do they chose to do it because they think their cool? Cigarettes cost lots of money. One pack, can cost around $20. Some people even end up broke from cigarettes. It is a killing machine.

Teeth

Today Mrs Laguda’s good friend Melissa came in to tell the grade 5/6s all about teeth. She is a dental nurse. She showed some pictures of teeth when you don’t brush them. It is so important to keep your teeth healthy. You can keep them healthy by brushing twice a day for two minutes, flossing, using non-alcoholic mouth wash, brushing your tongue and all areas on your teeth. She showed us different types of braces. Clear and metal. I think when I get my braces I will get the metal. I would choose metal because they are stronger and take less time to fix your teeth up. We also watched a video called Dental Defenders vs The Cavity Creeps. It showed us what cavity can do to your teeth.

Student Comment semester 1

I am having a great time in the grade 5/6 area so far this year. I am enjoying all of my subjects and have learnt many new things in each area. I am very privileged to be the School Captain and have taken part in many different leadership roles which is giving me more confidence.

Maths this semester has been both interesting and challenging. We have been doing a lot of problem solving which required me to use my brain a lot. I’m sure there are many answers that I got wrong, but I think I was pretty persistent and tried really hard to solve the problems. We have also done a lot of work with fractions and I am now able to multiply them and I feel much more confident with fractions than I did before.

In reading we have worked in literacy circles completing lots of activities about our book that we are reading in our groups. My favourite book so far has been Rowan of Rin. I enjoyed the ‘connector’ activity were we had to relate a scene to real life. It was tricky to relate this story as it was a fantasy type book but I thought that the character Rowan was brave and a leader and so was able to relate him to real life. I found reading out loud challenging because I am used to reading in my head.  So I will continue to read to my family at home for practice.

In writing, we have written several summaries about the different topics we have been looking at including war stories, Gaffney 4 and Parliament. We also have been researching on cyber bullying. I really enjoyed all the topics. I find it easier to write a summary if I have taken down some notes while we are listening. I’m not always quick at getting things down so I need to try and just pick the main point.

In integrated studies we have been rotating between different groups. We have been doing things for science, ICT and SEEL. We made our own aircraft in science using only three straws, six pieces of tape and a sheet of paper.  My aircraft did not fly too well because I didn’t make it into a gliding shape, but it was fun to see the different designs that did and didn’t work well.

The excursion to Parliament was excellent and it was really fun to hear how the politicians behave with all their cheering and shouting. The building was interesting and there was so much gold everywhere inside the houses. Christine Campbell showed us around and explained how parliament works.  Lunch in the park and the games were fun too.

I think it has been a great first semester and I’m proud of my efforts and I think I’ve worked well to achieve my goals. I am looking forward to learn more things next semester and prepare for high school.

100 word challenge Cricket

I love to play cricket. Cricket is my favorite sport to play outside of school. I have been playing cricket for 4 years. Last year I got an award for best bowler in the team. Cricket takes about 4 hour’s to finish. I love bowling yolkers because the batsman gets really scared and tries to step out of the way. The ball hits the stumps every time. Lace, Etha and Jarm also play for Saint Francis like me. I got a total of 12 wickets in one season! I will never give cricket up. I really, really, really love cricket!

Summary The Gaffney Four

Tim Allison attempted to climb the Gaffney four. He has been training and keeping very fit for this. He cycled, which is harder than running. Gaffney St is the easiest hill to ride up. It has a 16% gradient. Then  Bolingbroke hill which has a 20% gradient. Then Pardy hill which has a 25% gradient. And the mother of all hills, O’Hea hill, which has a gradient of 30%. If his heartbeat gets over 171 beats per minute, he could die. He was very fit. His goal was to cycle up all four hills. His heartbeat got over 171 and nearly died. He climbed all four.

Cyber Bullying

For writing we have been talking about cyber bullying. We have been discussing how to handle it and how bad it could be if you text a person a bad message. We did a little survey about who has got recently cyber bullied at school. 20% of the grade 5/6 said they got bullied recently at school. 28% of the grade 5/6 has a Facebook page. That means that they are underage for Facebook and are breaking the laws. I have learnt lots. I know  what to do online and how to be safe.
